What is Structural Integration?
Structural Integration is an ingenious, scientifically validated method developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf for realigning the body’s segments in relation to each other and in relation to the gravitational field. It releases the body from lifelong patterns of tension and bracing or the effects of injuries that result in imbalances which bring about pain. The better balanced body expends less vital energy. This biological energy efficiency is often experienced as a higher level of alertness and vitality. Movement becomes easier and overall personal functioning tends to improve.
The work is generally performed in a series of 10 sessions which progress from superficial into deeper layers of the body. Each session has a specific goal which prepares the body for the next session until the whole body is addressed. Some people may choose to tailor a shorter series to address a specific problem while others may require periodic maintenance due to their specific condition. To obtain lasting results, it is recommended to complete the entire series.
Before each session, the body’s alignment is assessed and treatment goals are discussed. To allow the practitioner a clear view of the body’s alignment and to feel tissue movement under the skins’ surface--male clients receive work in underwear or swimsuit, women in bra and underwear or two-piece swim suit.
During a session, pressure is applied by the hands of the practitioner to the sheets of fascia through the skin, loosening them, separating them where they have become stuck, and restoring their fluidity, elasticity, and free movement.
The client is often asked to perform a certain movement or to breathe into the area being worked. At the end of each session, integrative work is introduced to allow the new movement possibilities to be engrained deeper into the system.
While Structural Integration is primarily concerned with structural changes, any change in the physical body affects the whole person. A human being is comprised of many aspects - attitude, emotions, behaviour, and structure. Each is related to all the others. Clients often report positive change in their outlook on life and their ability to handle emotional changes.
